Ghost Hunting 101 (Must Read For  All Ghost Hunters)

A handy tool to bring along on your Ghost Hunt is a  long rage, remote,IR, temperature sensor. This unit can  help to  locate "cold spots" quickly in rooms of any size. It is our belief that these units are best  used in indoor investigations

One of the more valuable devices to use is the EMF  Meter(Electro Magnectic Field), This device can pick up changes in  magnetic fields indicating possible paranormal activity. Use  this  device  to  help determine where to point your camera on  hunt.

Pictured here are  and EMF Meter, a Tri Field Meter, A Gauss unit, and  a Remote, IR,Temperature Sensing  Unit.

The  unit of choice for detecting Magnetic fields , with the least interferance, is th eTri-Field Meter

Another great, inexpensive and often over looked  tool is a  motion activated alarm sensor. This unit can monitor a room, door way etc, while you are investigating else where. The device  will chime or sound an alarm if activated. The chime is  best if your near by as it cuts down on the risk of being startled or  setting the stage for panic.

Here are some helpful tips for your  Hunt:

1.  Never go alone on a ghost hunt. Take along a partner or travel in a small group for safety and peace of mind.

2.  Be respectful of the Ghosts & the surroundings, i.e, grave yards etc. If your respectful of them, they will be respectful to you. They are in that location for a reason, known only to them, and most likey are fine staying put, but you really do not anything following you home because you enraged them.

3.  Make sure all of your equipment is fully charged and that you have extra batteries available. Ghosts  seem  to have the ability to drain fully charged instruments. This is common knowledge to all who have been out on a hunt,, You can never have to many batteries, back up power sources or lighting, there is no such thing as too many flash lights etc. Just get caught in a dark basement of  an old deserted factory and you'll see why.

4.  Don't walk into an area snapping pictures right off the bat. Give those ghosts that are present some time to get used to you and for you to get a "feel" for the location.

5.  Be aware of the surroundings for safety sake. For best results, always take a day walk through before doing a nighttime investigation, if possible. The other option would be to show up just before dark (dusk) and have a look around before starting.

6.  A ghost hunter begins an investigation/or hunt with only the  best  or positive feelings for those that are with them and for the ghosts as well. In other words, full respect for the living and the dead, and a positive attitude are best. Remeber there are more of them than there are of you.

7.  Above all - NO HORSE PLAY! No fooling around A serious and conscientious ghost hunter gets results, stays safe, and is viewed as a mature professional. Plus they are invited to far more hunts and locations. If one of yor party is insistant on this behaviour, or is prone to saying "BOOO!" "got ya"  or "scared ya" to others ... send them home.. period.

8.  Large groups should split up into smaller groups of four individuals or less per team, never leave any one on their own.If one is going to the  washroom  or what ever, two must go. It would not do well if  you got lost in  an old house, hosptial, factory, seculded location by your self in the dark, your fun hunt night, could soon turn into a night of pure terror for you as some are prone to panic, and  either thier mind or the forces around them, play tricks on them. And with two of you, there is always a witness if  "something" does appear or manifest.

9.  Bring along a notebook to record significant occurrences. Begin by logging in the starting time and weather conditions etc. Check out our Environmental page before you head out. Take note of the moon phases, solar activity, and  the season as well.  When at the location,  make note of surrounding lights so as to not confuse them with anomalies later on in the pictures. Record all meter abnormalities(if you have them), strange sounds, sightings and feeling or emotions. Each group should take their own notes and compare afterwards.

10.  Do not show fear. A fair ghost will not come around if they sense you are fearful. Yet your fear can have a mischievous ghost feeding on that fear, and they will. If your really fearful, perhaps it may be best to consider another interest or  hunting during day light hours with a group.

11.  Always remember, you are the one with the body, and you are the one with the power. You are in control. Don't give up your power or control to them through fear. Fear is the "mind killer" and  all to often it can  result in serious injury,  emotional pain, and mental trauma.Treat Ghost Hunting with healthly respect. You are dealing  with real forces, not  Hollywood  make believe, and the  first time you see, hear, meet, photograph them, your out look will change for ever.

 12.  Keep in mind that a lot of the places you will be investigating will be secluded and that can be a danger in itself. Because of this you should always bring along some form of protection. I suggest pepper spray if you can, but there is safety in numbers and do bring a cell phone. I am of course talking about protecting yourself from the living, not the dead.

13.  If you are going to be taking pictures, be sure and read the   Ghost Photography Page

14.  If you feel that some unknown force wants you out of there...then by all means get out! You should never go against hese feelings or you could end up having something show up

 15.  Never dare an unseen entity to make itself known to you. However, It is okay to ask those present if you can take their picture or record their voice.

16.  Make sure you have permission before entering private property such as a cemetery or abandoned house. Get signed authorization if at all possible. If your group is out at night, be sure to tell the local police what you are up to. Just remember this though, when you are caught sneaking around, it makes all of us  look bad. You could also be fined, jailed, seriously injured or in the worst case killed. Imagine if some was sneaking around your house at 3:00 a.m.? What would you do? When talking to the owner, custodian, police etc, be professional,.respectful. Show them you i.d, your business cards, web address (if you have one) Tell tell them  why you are doing the  hunt, and respect their wishes at all times.

17.  If you are not familiar with EMF meters, motion detectors, long range thermal  temperature senors etc, you might want to check out  them out, as meters can be quite helpful in locating ghostly presences.(our page is under construction)

18.  Now a word about ghost voices, referred to as EVP (electronic voice phenomena). Take along an audio recorder and as you are recording ask questions to those invisible beings that might be in the area. Pause for an answer. It's also a good idea to ask some questions and then leave the device recording in a remote location for around 20 minutes or so. When you come back you might have your replies! For a list of  EVP Instructions for capturing ghost voices, please see our EVP page.

19.   Remeber, you represent not only  your group, but the entire Ghost Hunting Community. All to often we can be viewed as "odd, wierd, ghouls, devils or what you."  Lets not allow this perception to  continue. The most of us may be amatures, but this is a professional persuit, so act like one.

20.  Thank these ghost or forces that are unseen for any evidence you may have acquired during the investigation/hunt.
